Case Study: Sustainable Road Rehabilitation in Phoenix, Arizona
Carbon Crusher successfully executed its inaugural road rehabilitation project in the United States at Dreamy Draw Recreational Park, Phoenix, Arizona. Utilizing our full-depth reclamation method, we were able to strengthen and repair an access road and a horse trailer parking lot, achieving impressive durability results while sequestering 22,183 lbs1 of CO2.
Introduction
For 16 years, Carbon Crusher has been dedicated to road rehabilitation that focuses on three essential pillars: recyclability, waste reuse, and sustainability. Originating from Norway, we have now expanded our operations to the United States. This case study examines our pilot project in Phoenix, Arizona, where we repaired an access road and a horse trailer parking lot at Dreamy Draw Recreational Park.
The Challenge
The existing infrastructure at Dreamy Draw Recreational Park required both strengthening and refurbishment. Our task was to perform these improvements under extreme climatic conditions, leveraging our unique technology to enhance the durability of the roadways while upholding our sustainability goals.
The Solution
Full Depth Reclamation with Biobinder
Our unique approach employs a specialised Crusher that recycles old gravel and asphalt roads into a new base layer. By repurposing the existing material, there is no need for removal or addition of new materials. Following this, we apply our Biobinder, derived from waste products of the paper industry, to bind the new road surface.
Carbon Sequestration
In this project, Carbon Crusher's proprietary Biobinder played a pivotal role in sequestering carbon, which is a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Integrating our Biobinder into the road rehabilitation process led to the sequestration of 22,183 pounds of CO2. This milestone underscores our carbon-negative strategy and our mission to not just repair roads but to also actively diminish the carbon footprint associated with road construction and maintenance.
Results
Based on independent third-party testing, the following outcomes were observed:
- The rehabilitated unpaved access road was 25% stronger than its original paved version.
- The repaired horse trailer parking lot exhibited 70% greater strength compared to its previous condition.
Testimonials
Todd Shackelford, Deputy Parks & Recreation Director for the City of Phoenix, remarked:
The City of Phoenix celebrates the completion of its inaugural project in partnership with Carbon Crusher, marking a monumental milestone. Together, we have achieved the remarkable feat of sequestering CO₂ directly in the upgraded road and parking lot in Dreamy Draw Recreation Area. This project epitomizes our unwavering commitment to both quality and environmental stewardship in our cherished recreational areas.
Conclusion
The successful completion of this project in Arizona validates the efficacy of Carbon Crusher's unique road rehabilitation methods, both in terms of durability and sustainability. We are committed to future projects in the United States, partnering with municipalities that share our vision for sustainable city planning.
